For much of human history, fasting was woven into religious and cultural traditions rather than approached as a dietary strategy for managing body weight or metabolic health.
Today, fasting is reemerging in the public discussion through an added lens: health benefits. Practices that have existed for centuries are now being examined through nutrition science, with researchers studying their effects on body weight, glucose regulation, metabolism, cardiovascular health, and other aspects of human health.
The modern interest in fasting is therefore not the invention of a new practice. It is the re-examination of an old one.
Fasting Has Long Been Part of Human Tradition

Fasting has been practiced across religious traditions for centuries, although the forms and purposes have varied considerably. Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and other traditions have incorporated different forms of fasting, from abstaining from food and drink during defined periods to restricting particular foods or meals.
In these traditions, fasting has commonly been associated with practices such as worship, self-discipline, reflection, purification, and devotion. The specific rules differ, but the underlying idea of deliberately going without food has been remarkably widespread.
The health effects of fasting were not necessarily the primary reason for these practices, but that does not mean they were entirely separate from people's understanding of physical wellbeing. Fasting existed within broader traditions of health, discipline, and ways of living long before modern nutrition science began measuring its effects.
What is new is not fasting itself, but the questions now being asked about it.
Fasting Takes Different Forms

Modern fasting encompasses several distinct approaches, and they are not interchangeable.

Time-restricted eating: Food is consumed within a defined daily window, such as eight or ten hours, followed by a longer fasting period.

Alternate-day fasting: Days of very low or no energy intake alternate with days of normal eating.

Some of these approaches have been popularized by particular researchers, clinicians, or health advocates, while others have emerged through clinical research. Their popularity has also evolved alongside growing interest in calorie restriction, metabolic health, longevity, and the timing of food intake.
The modern fasting approach therefore does not represent one single dietary method. It is a collection of approaches built around the same basic idea: deliberately creating periods in which the body is not receiving food.
How Fasting Affects the Body

When food intake stops, the body does not simply wait for the next meal. Its use of available energy begins to change.
After eating, nutrients from food provide much of the body's immediate energy needs, while some glucose is stored as glycogen. As the fasting period continues, insulin levels generally fall and the body increasingly draws on stored fuel. Fatty acids become more important as an energy source, and during longer periods without food the liver increases production of ketone bodies, which can be used by several tissues, including the brain.
These are normal features of human metabolism. What matters from a health perspective is whether these metabolic changes translate into meaningful benefits when fasting is practiced deliberately.
Research suggests that fasting can produce measurable effects, although the results are not uniform across different fasting approaches or individuals.
A 2025 systematic review and network meta-analysis published in The BMJ examined 99 randomized clinical trials involving 6,582 adults. Compared with unrestricted eating, intermittent fasting was associated with reductions in body weight.
The overall findings suggest that fasting can be an effective way to structure when and how much people eat, but they do not show that intermittent fasting is inherently superior to other approaches that involve eating less.
Is Fasting the Same for Everyone?
Fasting does not affect everyone in exactly the same way. The same fasting schedule can be easy for one person to follow and difficult for another, and factors such as sleep, work schedules, physical activity, medications, age, and existing health conditions can all influence how a person responds.
The fasting pattern itself can also matter. A shorter daily fasting window creates a different physiological exposure from fasting on alternate days or for longer periods. Timing may matter as well. Research into time-restricted eating is examining whether eating earlier or later in the day produces different metabolic effects, in part because glucose regulation and other metabolic processes follow circadian rhythms.
This is why the question is not simply whether fasting “works.” Different fasting approaches may produce different effects, and the same approach may not be equally suitable or useful for everyone.
